Keynote Review
I’ve always been a fan of singer/ harp player/ guitarist/ songwriter Eddie Martin, and this new release only serves to reinforce his reputation.
Nine of the ten songs are original, the only cover being a version of Son House’s ‘Black Mama’, one of two solo live tracks (the other being ‘One-Man Band Rag’ where Eddie plays finger picked guitar while blowing harp and playing foot percussion). The other eight cuts range from the Elmore-ish slowies ‘Selfish Guy’ and ‘Play The Blues With Feeling’ to the organ and riffing horn section backed, B.B. King style ‘Bubble Blues’.
‘Tell Me Why’ is a swinging West Coast shuffle; ‘Barbed Wire’ inhabits slightly rockier territory and the set closes with another trio instrumental, ‘Bone Shaker’.
Martin has without a doubt to be ranked up among the top half dozen UK bluesplayers around. His fans will be lining up to hand over their money for this set.” Blues and Rhythm, 2005, Phil Wight

Musicians: Eddie Martin: Vocal, National Resophonic, Electric and Slide Guitars, Rack Harmonica, Marion Dolton, Bass; Michael Wiedrich; Special Guests: Paddy Milner, Piano Gary Baldwin, Hammond.

Another blast of blues from this master

Another release from Bristol’s master bluesman – Play the blues with feeling is a great collection of both acoustic and electric blues.

Just listen to the superb slide guitar in Selfish Guy, then the solo acoustic blues of My Black Mama, followed by the big band blues sound of Bubble Blues (reminded me a bit of BB King) including some soulful Hammond Organ playing.

What’s great about Eddie’s CDs is that he doesn’t just stick to one type of blues – he gives you a taste of everything – you want Elmore James style slide? you want soulful unaccompanied Taj Mahal style acoustic? you want big band BB King style blues? you want blistering harmonica playing (try Bristol Shakedown)? it’s all here – thoroughly recommended!”. Playing the blues with feeling is something that Eddie Martin does in spades… He can do it vocally and on guitar and harmonica, acoustically or amplified, solo or with a band… Apart from ‘One Man Band Rag’ and his excellent acoustic rendition of Son House’s ‘Black Mama’, Eddie is superbly backed on all tracks by bass & drums.” Froots 2005
